| The story of the Bibliotheca Palatina would make such a cool movie. So back in the 1400s, someone opened a library in this church in Heidelberg, Germany, because it had great light for reading. Other people agreed, and over the years, the collection grew until it numbered over 5,000 books and almost 4,000 manuscripts and was one of the largest and most valuable libraries in Europe. The whole thing was part of the German Renaissance--Gutenberg, Luther, Durer, all those guys. Anyway, during the Thirty Years' War (Catholics v Protestants), the town was sacked by the Catholic League. Hundreds of priceless books in the Palatinate were destroyed or dispersed. A good chunk of the collection was rescued by Maximillian of Bavaria, however, who sent the books to Rome. The books were taken across the Alps on 200 mules under the supervision of Leo Allatius, keeper of the Vatican Library, who saw to their safe transport. Freaking awesome! The Vatican Library kept the books until the 19th century when the Pope was persuaded to return 855 of them--the ones written in German--to the Heidelberg. The Vatican still has the rest of the Heidelberg books to this day, but these books have been marked with a Wittelsbach (Bavarian) leaf symbol to denote their origin. ...tell me it wouldn't be cool to see Maximilian encountering the ransacked library, realizing what he'd found, and then ordering the rescue of all those books. For the sake of the books or the sake of his own favor with the Pope? There's your character plot hook, lol. ...and tell me it wouldn't be cool to see a bunch of guys herding pack mules loaded with thousands of books through the Alps and into Rome. Or to see Leo Allatius worrying his nuts off over their well-being. Omg! | |

| Episode 5.14 of NCIS is strange anyway, because it's dredging up a situation that occured half a season before, it's told quite a bit in flashbacks, and it basically suggests Jenny Sheppard is a murderer, but the thrillingly weird part is when Fornell asks Tim whether his relationship with Tony is professional, and Tim flashes to:
a) A very quick shot of Tony and Tim staring at each other as Tim is shirtless. b) Tony calling Tim an array of endearments (or. you know. insults.) c) Tim and Tony engaging in full-body contact fisticuffs. d) Them sprawled on the floor in a suggestive manner. Tim on top.
At which point Tim kind of chokes and says "yeah, it's very professional, yeah."
Really, show? Really? Subtlety is just not your strong point at all. And I love you for it. ♥

| Title: Gravity Rating: Green Cortina for angst. Word Count: 100 Spoilers: Set during 2X08. A/N: Yes, another one. I've given my head a good shake, so hopefully now they'll be fewer drabbles falling out of it. Anyway. Enjoy.
Gravity On the scans it looks like a smudge, one bright, careless fingerprint that can never be erased. The doctors measure the damage in millimetres, and what was all-consuming now becomes small. And benign. “Totally benign,” that was the phrase. Kindly, merciful, compassionate. Safe. None of those words have life here. Twice a week Frank Morgan has someone turn you onto your side so that he can check the stitches. The movement creates a sensation of sick pressure, like a crushing fist inside your head. “That’s the shunt”, Morgan tells you, but you know he’s wrong. It’s the pull of 1973.

Please remember that you don't have to actually *use* the word in your drabble:
Bitter Stalker Water Stripper Litter
PLEASE try to remember to make each drabble a comment in response to the original post. That way, if the comments start to collapse, the drabbles themselves should remain visible. Thanks.
The rules, such as they are: 1) A drabble is, by definition a 100 word story. As this is a drabble challenge and not a “snippet” challenge, all responses should be 100 words exactly, no exceptions.
2) I have been asked to keep this to a single posting a week to avoid cluttering people’s flists. So, drabbles will be posted as individual comments under the posting. IF you would like to post your drabble on your own LJ and link to it that’s all right too. Just put that link in a comment under the posting.
RATING: Rather than worrying about individual headings I’m just going to say that any drabbles posted for these challenges might be a Brown or even Red Cortina for content/language, so let the reader beware! .

| I was at the school working until six today.
My class and I are going on camp to Alice Springs tomorrow. We'll be back on Friday. We're going to the Reptile Park, Swimming, having Fish, Salad and Chips for dinner (we're not so much with the fish in this community, so that will be kind of new for some of these kids, hah) and then we're going to see Cloudy, with a Chance of Meatballs. Friday, the kids are going camel riding. Fun, right? I think it sounds like fun.
My mission tonight is to make CDs for the 10 hour bus ride there and back. I don't have my whole music collection because both of my external hard drives are currently inaccessible (blown power pack), but hopefully I have enough. Then I need to pack a bag with my sleeping bag, etc. Eat dinner, have a shower. Then precious, precious sleep.

| Much as I love this show, one of the threads that was never, to my knowledge, satisfactorily tied up was the question of Sam's 1973 identity. Is he, as far as his colleagues are concerned, Sam Tyler, on transfer from Hyde, or Sam Williams, screwed-up oddball working undercover? In the sequel he's referred to as 'Tyler', despite the fact that Sam revealed his 'true' identity to several members of the team. The writers seemed to rather conveniently forget about that plot point. And, for that matter, what the hell happened to Frank Morgan? One minute he's standing in that tunnel at the climax of episode 8, and the next- poof. Arguably the whole 'tunnel' scene can be taken to be happening only in Sam's (Williams' or Tyler's) head, and Morgan was never actually 'there' to start with. But what about the rest? And I know that one can claim to write off the whole of 1973, before and after the 'tunnel' scene, as one big coma-dream. But I reckon that's a)boring and b)unfair to all the brilliant characters who inhabit 1973. So, can anyone offer me a decent explanation of who Sam is by the end of the episode, and where Morgan got to? One that doesn't rest solely on 'it was all a dream'? Much appreciated. | |
